Winter on the Farm: Chaos, Chicks, and Big Dreams in the Making
Winter at Matthews Flower Farm
The farm in winter: a quiet, still moment at Matthews Flower Farm, where every season brings its own charm.
You know those dreamy, peaceful images of farm life? Yeah… that’s not exactly what’s happening here right now. Winter at Matthews Flower Farm is more like controlled chaos — and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Our 100+ year-old farmhouse? It’s charming, sure — a little worn but full of character. But the real action is happening where the baby chicks are staying — not in the farmhouse, but safely tucked in their own cozy space. Among them is Vera, our crossbeak chick, who’s small but mighty and stealing hearts left and right. She’s a daily reminder that a little grit and a lot of personality go a long way.
Outside, the fields may look calm, but don’t let them fool you. We’re working hard behind the scenes, getting the soil prepped for a wild, colorful spring. Regenerating soil isn’t glamorous — it’s muddy, slow, and full of science — but it’s the foundation for everything we grow. And when those first blooms finally pop? You’ll know it was all worth it.
But the real action? It’s in the life happening all around us. Marshall, our resident high school senior, keeps things interesting with his Oscar-worthy excuses for running late to school. Michael, who lives at home while going to college, jumps in when he’s not studying — whether it’s lending a hand on the farm or providing the perfect amount of sibling sarcasm. Maverick, our "main man" farm puppy, continues his campaign for Most Adorable Trouble-Maker. And somewhere in the middle of it all, there’s something exciting in the works — a little project we’ve been dreaming up that we can’t wait to share when the time is right. Stay tuned for that one.
We know farm life isn’t always picture-perfect — it’s messy, unpredictable, and full of surprises. But that’s what makes it beautiful. And if you’re along for the ride with us, we couldn’t be more grateful. Big things are coming, and we can’t wait to share every crazy, colorful bit of it with you.
